Where Castril is located |
Castril is a town in the province of
Granada. It is located in the southwestern part of the region of Huéscar. The
town of Castril is located at the foot of a steep hill, bordering the Natural
Park of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park.
The
pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Cabeza stands out among its festivities, which
is prepared on the next-to-last Sunday of April. The following Sunday is when they ascend to La Solana in
procession, where the festive celebration takes place. But the celebrations
that perhaps are more known are those dedicated to the Virgen of the Rosario. It takes place the first weekend of October and last several days.

The
evolution of the natural elements, together with the human, has favored that
both aspects are totally integrated in the landscape. At present, a rebuilt statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, facing at the village, constituting
the clearest sign of identity of the town. There are many remains at
the top of the Peña of the medieval castle.

The Sierra of Castril and part of the Sierra Seca, both separated by the Castril River, constitutes one of the territories of the Andalusian Geography that by its natura.

Fine glasses and at the same time popular. Villagers and cortijeros, and also lordships bought them. That is why the Castril glasses likewise appear in the hidden cortijos of the sierra, and in the shelves of the "Victoria and Albert Museum" of London. Today Castril's glass can be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Granada and also in several European museums.

The
villa and the Nobel Prize for Literature José Saramago maintained a fruitful
relationship, since he was named Favourite Son of the city because his wife was
born there. The Municipal Corporation baptized its Library with his name. The
following year he was granted with the universal Swedish prize. Since then, the
"José Saramago Center" has been formed, with headquarters in Castril,
from where it dynamize the entire northern part of the province culturally.
